OT - AMD/cien
OT - AMD - Could not believe my eyes when I saw it up 40% today.
Thought perhaps they got bought out. Or at least sold their
graphics division (Their purchase years ago of Canada-based ATI has
always been questionable - Nvidia is just....better.) The actual
news is that they've indicated they'll have a positive quarter,
after six successive losing quarters. Unreal. Apparently, 'free
passes' are still available in this market if you're on life
support one quarter, and doing the Jitterbug the next.
CIEN did bounce as I thought it might today, up almost 3%. I no
longer have convictions except for NOK - CIEN needs a quarter where
they meet or beat on all cylinders, and with capex purse strings
still tight by customers, I'd think that's not simple to
achieve. I'm concerned that mgmt. has not really been all that
truthful - about 3 quarters or so ago, they claimed revs were below
expectations because ATT (I think it was them) had delyed an order
that would be filled in the following quarter, boosting revs, and I
think that never materialized. A good number of analysts are still
pounding the table on them, and they may do well in the long run.
But promising and not delivering eventually alienates the analyst
coverage, and no company needs that headache.
And then there's MSFT - read a humorous article that
opened with 'Getting into the phone business was Steve Ballmer's
137th attempt at making Microsoft relevant outside of its PC
business.' Said they have 2% of the cell phone market worldwide,
and it's time to fold the tent.

Ballmer single handedly saved NOK! If NOK does as well as I
expect over the next 3 to 4 years I too will be eternally grateful
to the man!
