US Govt to build 5g network?

The US government is considering a federal takeover of portions of the country's mobile broadband networks, according to documents obtained by Axios

A National Security Council official presented senior members of the Trump administration and other agencies with information suggesting that the United States needs to centralize its 5G network by the end of President Donald Trump's first term as a safeguard against Chinese cybersecurity and economic threats, according to the documents.

In a PowerPoint presentation and memo obtained by Axios, two options were suggested: have the American government pay for and build a network, or have wireless providers build their own 5G networks.

Government control of 5G infrastructure would be unprecedented. The memo Axios obtained compared the nationalization of 5G to "the 21st century equivalent of the Eisenhower National Highway System."

Jon,

It's great that the news about basically nationalizing and speeding up the building of a national, extensive 5g network is propelling NOK in a down market today.  But not only are all the telecoms opposed to it, almost all the FCC directors oppose it (even Democrats don't want to bite the feeding hand of telecoms), and it's said to be low-level discussions that wouldn't reach Trump for about 8 months. Given such opposition, plus Trump's having the attention span of a guppy, I'd be very (pleasantly, albeit) surprised if it ever came to fruition. Yes, I think Trump once said that the American people will have the 'best (internet?) in the world', but then, what hasn't he said that about? And it'd be interesting to see what Republicans think of a what in effect would be a government takeover of publc businesses, if that's how the recommendations ran.

And if such a proposal survived, I wonder whether there might be prejudice against NOK or ERIC, given that Finland has historically been seen by Russia as something of a 'puppet state', and given that the point of such a proposal is to have a telephone system that isn't so prone to meddling by foreign suppliers. (Finland used to occupy the entire Kola peninsula - Russia grabbed half of it when Finland repeatedly refused to allow Russian military bases on its soil. It's why Finland joined Nazi Germany in WWII - as trhe only means to take back their land from the Russians, but that didn't work out too well in the end.)  Finland has kept its 'neutral' stance regarding membership in NATO, given its fear of Russia, although they are a 'Partner for Peace' NATO program member.

But if all of this came to fruition, and NOK was a large player, how nice would that be?
