ERIC: The ship keeps sinking

Ericsson's results are truly horrific.  IMO, Nokia should be able to take share over the long term.  BTW, it has reduced ranks by much less than 1000 employees, you would think there would be far more urgency.  Management may be new but it appears it is still "a deer in the lights".

These are the LightReading.com opinions on the quarter:

lt cap,

Either ERIC's troubles are NOK's gain, or, as I think happened over the last one or two CC's, it's been seen as a 'drought' for them both (I *think* NOK missed, not certain my memory is good on that) and a sign that there's more trouble ahead before those stocks turn the corner (If they 'turn the corner' - ERIC sounds as if it may get crippled if things don't get better.

Jamok,

Because of a slow Industry, ERIC's problems may also be Nokia's as well.  Ericsson's revenues ticked down 11%.  I read an article a month or so ago where it stated that Huawei had increased revenues handsomely, yet gross margins had declined significantly.  One could fear that Huawei is under-pricing contracts in order to gain further market share. If so this could affect both in the short term.

Because NOK can now provide an end to end solution, it puts it in avery good competitive position against ERIC and Huawei.  I believe over the long term, it can hold its own against any in this industry.  What Huawei is doing can also be treated as an anti-trust/monopolistic matter in Europe and the US.  I am surprised we have not heard much in that regard.

lt cap,

If memory serves me well, European regulation of unfair practices is a fair amount more stringent than it is in the US - AMD won their unfair practices compaint against INTC there, Microsoft was told it had to unbundle IE from the operating system, etc. I hope there's a strong enough case for NOK at least give Huawei notice (and that it has more 'theet' than Mac-Donald putting Iran 'on notice'.

That said, today is a great day for NOK. The ship hasn't come in, but it looks like it's heading towards port. Folks who bought even up to the high $5. 30's made a good choice (not me - I've got along ways to go to get back to my average, but it's all long term).

In other news ATT is bragging that it will have by year's end the infrastruce in Austin that will give subscribers' '5g' which will  'leave others in the dust'.Except for two problems: There are few phones that can handle 5 g,  and ATT's definition of '5g' is arbitrary, given that the industry hasn't quite defined what 5g is, and ATT's announcement also waffles in terms of using something like 'we're laying the evolutionay path to 5g.' Which comes down to ATT doing what they do best - Lie. and obfuscate.

I agree, the ship is heading to port now. I have stayed firm in my belief that NOK will pay off handsomely, my timing as always was terrible, but as I said before, the investment thesis continued to hold water for the very long term. The dip into the 4s game me the opportunity to acquire more shares, I am glad I did.

With Ericsson faultering, I truly believe NOK will win more contracts, specially when they include not only Wireless but also include Switching, Routing and Optical, i.e. an end to end solutiion.

BTW, this is the Call Transcript for NOK's CC, it gives further detail on the quarter.  I did not know that of all the cost reductions a.k.a "Synergies from merger with ALU", NOK will only see E250M in savings this FY, with the bulk of E1.2B in savings benefiting next FY. So the acceleration im earnings will take place in 2018. Suri also took the time to address the one area where NOK did not do well, i.e. Wireline Networks:
