OT - CIEN
earnings

OT - CIEN - Woodchuck came out of its hole and didn't
see his shadow - 6 more months (if not 6 more years) of 'winter'
for this stock. Ugh. They didn't seem to have lied about the shift
in ATT revs into this quarter, as they beat revs and earnings, if
I'm reading it correctly. But they also gave no hint of this nasty
forward guidance, in which they're saying they're going to gain
market share, but that growth itself will be slow and apparently
disappointing. This appears to me to be more than the generic
'lumpiness' of revenue in the sector. I'm not sure there was a
better way to handle this, but losing 17% of your value in one day
suggests to me either it could've either been managed better in
terms of breaking the news (early earnings warning?), or that there
is no way to soften the blow. 16 of 20 analysts have a 'buy' on the
stock with an average PT of 29. I imagine that is about to change
markedly. Altho Well Fargo and Cramer (Ugh) is counseling patience,
buying opp, and taking the long term view. INFN off 3.5% - I think
they're competitors, or maybe it's that MKM partners named CIEN and
INFN as their 'top picks' in optical networking at a conference on
Nov. 23rd. I really hate it when CEOs at CC's statements are all
future tense -'we will' and 'we can' rather than 'we did' - but
what else is there to say? - We screwed up and will continue to do
so?

All my shares are underwater, and not
selling options as a hedge on CIEN and buying back some calls on
INFN yesterday was obviously not the right move. But I'm in it for
the long haul - so I'll sit tight - altho I can't see any positive
drivers in the near-term going forard - when INFN does report, if
they do well it goes badly for CIEN, and if they do badly, it goes
badly for CIEN. At least ALU just dances to the tune of NOK. I'm
sure lt cap has a better handle than I on what the CIEN results
mean.

CIEN's report sure was ugly. I hate it when companies see
a bumpy road ahead but chose not to disclose it. A diservice
to their investors. INFN down in sympathy and because they
are "guilty by association".
