EA unveils Project
Atlas
EA is talking about Project Atlas. Best to read about it rather
than let me try to explain it, because tbh it's a confusing jumble
of tech buzzwords. However, the key takeaway imo is the talk of a
thin client for gaming. This is the future (unfortunately, speaking
as a gamer). In fact you can already play games like AC Odyssey
this way and it's the only way to play that game on Switch. So the
player can connect anywhere with a controller and a screen,
including therefore in the future Smart TV's, and play AAA games.
This means more access to customers, and it also means higher
margins because more games could be bought on the publishers own
Store instead of having to go through Live, PSN or Steam which all
take 30% of revenue.
I don't know how far away Atlas is from fruition. Perhaps
talking about it now is EA's way of trying to protect the share
price which is at 18-month lows. Stick with us for the long term,
may be the message there.
Earnings this evening. FIFA should be strong. BFV guidance maybe
not.
